This is our Kwikset Kevo review, our pick for smart locks based on what’s currently available. Kwikset Kevo is definitely a solid option especially if you already have a Kwikset brand lock installed on your door. What we love about Kwikset Kevo is the variety of ways you can get into your residence with this smart lock:
- You can touch the lock
- Use your smart phone
- Use the provided key fob
- Open the lock traditionally, with your key
If you’re at all worried about security, Kwikset Kevo has you covered – it uses technology that determines whether you are inside or outside the door trying to get in. Providing access to others has never been easier either. No more going to the hardware store for spare keys! You can easily give family or friends access through the mobile app, and just as easily remove their access if you no longer want them to be able to gain entry with their smart phones.
Kwikset Kevo is compatible with Amazon Alexa, as well as the Nest thermostat. Note that it is not compatible with Apple HomeKit.
As we mentioned above, this is a great choice if you already have a Kwikset lock. You can actually rekey the smart lock to work with the Kwikset keys you already have – for example if you’re renting a place and the landlord doesn’t want your to change the locks. Installing Kwikset Kevo is super easy with the included instructions – and if you purchase it on Amazon, you can actually get installation included. The Kwikset Kevo needs 4 AA batteries to run and they last a long time with this smart lock.
We love how easy it is to unlock your door with the included key fob. Throw it on your keychain and you’re good to go – you don’t need to take out your phone to get in. If someone in the house doesn’t have a smart phone, you can also give it to them as a spare key. The box includes one fob, but you can buy additional fobs if you need them.
Once you’ve finished the installation of the smart lock, just press the program button to get it going. Download the Kevo app and scan the QR code to connect it. After scanning, you can go ahead and put the cover on.
On the app, you’ll be asked to create a Kevo account and then set up unlimited digital users, or E-keys. Set up notifications for certain times of the day or certain users. The app will show your battery power, and you can set up events where the smart lock will perform the set function automatically for you. The app lights up green, and red for locked – easy to see the status of your smart lock.
Of the smart locks we have reviewed, the Kwikset Kevo has the most and best useful features, particularly the key fobs and unlimited capacity for E-keys. The one possible downside is the lack of compatibility with Apple HomeKit, but if you are using Amazon Alexa with the Echo as a hub, we highly recommend going with this smart lock.
