In this post we will share our review of the latest August Pro Smart Lock – the 3rd Generation. This smart lock is available in silver and dark grey, and is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Z-Wave wireless technology. It has some great features to make your front door smarter.
First of all, installation is super easy as the August Pro Smart Lock will work with most existing deadbolts. You can keep your existing lock and keys, and most likely all you need is a screwdriver to install this smart lock. The box comes with the lock, sensor, mounting hardware, and 4 AA batteries you will need to get started. As with most smart home devices, there is an app to download to operate it, the free August Home App. There is a code on the back of the lock you use to sync the device with the app on your smart phone. The August Pro Smart Lock works with bluetooth as well as WiFi, giving you both of these options for connectivity.
Now to get to some of the best features of this model:
- The August Pro Smart Lock provides keyless entry to your home. Your existing keys will still work, but you can do everything from your smart phone if you choose to. This applies to giving access to friends and family as well, so no more worrying about copying keys.
- The app has an activity feed so you can monitor who is coming and going at any time.
- The August Pro Smart Lock has a unique feature that other smart locks on the market do not have, called DoorSense. The DoorSense sensor provided with the August Pro Smart Lock tells you that your door is closed and locked securely. We also love that the sensor can be programmed to lock once the door is closed, so you don’t have to worry about remembering to lock you door.
- An optional feature when you have the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge is the ability to speak to your lock with Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant. You can use voice-assist to lock your door and to ask if the door is locked. You can purchase a kit that includes the lock and the bridge if this is a feature you would like.
In reviewing this smart lock, there are a few cons we’d like to make you aware of as well:
- Many users have reported that the DoorSense technology can be finicky and does not always engage properly.
- The auto-lock takes about 2 minutes to work, and some people would probably prefer their door to lock right away on leaving their home.
- The lock is rather large; we find the design to be a bit poor and lacks the streamlined look we’d prefer.
In summary, the August Pro Smart Lock has some nice features that seem to function better in theory than practice, based on our and other user reviews. This might be a good option for you if you’re looking for quick installation and integration with your existing lock. For our part here at Have A Smarter Home, we would recommend the Kwikset Kevo Smart Lock for overall design and functionality preference.
